The participation costs are € 600 per month (21600 € per 36 months) because SMART is a laboratory-based EMJD where research will be strongly based at the experimental facilities and at the field research. This amount covers the use of structures, laboratories, experiments, equipment, consumables, and access to general services like language courses, library etc. No additional payment for attending the doctoral programme, or parts thereof, are required.
The candidate agrees that the total amount of 21600 € will be retained from the grant directly by the coordinating institution at the beginning of the 36 months period as Consortium fees. This will not include payments that may be required by other institutions under different headings. The consortium fees available at each institution will be directly managed by the local programme coordinator for the benefit of every Doctoral Candidate who visits the institution within his/her compulsory mobility scheme. Such amount shall mostly cover expenses related to the research projects of candidates during their stay at the institution, regardless of the partner being both primary or secondary institution. In this respect, there is no a priori-fixed yearly amount for each research project, but the amount shall be allocated to guarantee equal opportunity for each candidate to access the resources required for his/her individual research project and to be in contact with the relevant international scientific community for his/her research topic. Moreover a minor part of the Consortium fees available at each institution can be used for expenses related to the participation of the Doctoral Candidates’ supervisors to activities that directly benefit the corresponding research project and the successful programme implementation (e.g. participation to the Induction Week and Research Workshops).
NB: Doctoral candidates who will receive non EM-funded grants will benefit from the same financial arrangements. Thus, no differences have been made in this respect between third-country and European candidates.
